Blog Post: Olive Oil Ice Cream. Seriously?
About six months ago two women just returning from Italy asked me if I ever make ice cream with olive oil. My reaction was much like many others. Seriously?? After listening to their description of the flavor and undeniable smooth texture I was determined to give olive oil ice cream it's day in the production room.
We soon found out besides drizzling olive oil over ice cream in Italy, New York had embraced this flavor with abandon over ten years ago. Rumor has it if you look hard enough you can buy it from a cart vendor in Washington Square Park. After our first run we knew exactly why Italy and New York are considered amazing ice cream destinations....now enter Milwaukee!
The first thing to know about olive oil ice cream is there is nothing oily about it. The oil actually creates a smooth texture that can't be duplicated. When this hits your pallete you will truly understand. Second, the fruity tones of the olive oil accent and coellesce with the sweetness of the ice cream along with the mellow underlying pepper tones. Lastly, the natural hue from the oil simply creates a beautiful ice cream.
Enjoy this flavor with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt or chocolate shavings. Accompany a scoop with fresh peaches or even raspberry with a balsamic chocolate sauce. Or just don't screw with a good thing and eat it just as it is.
